    Yoga was awesome tonight.

I’ve decided to try to switch my default yoga day from Thursday to Tuesday- Thursday’s class is cost by donation, so it’s been getting progressively more crowded. Last week I missed it because the subway was being dumb, but there were 16 people so there wouldn’t have been room for me anyway.

Today I decided sort of at the last minute to go, so I walked around the corner to the studio and was one of two people there for class.

The instructor asked if we had any requests and I said I’d like to do pigeon pose, since I know it’s good for runners and since I’ve been upping my mileage it seemed like more of that would be a good idea.

The small class size was really great- at first it was weird because I knew that there was a 50% chance that the teacher was watching me and it made me self conscious. After about 10 minutes I realized how beneficial it was to have such focused attention since she could really help us perfect the poses to our best ability.

My thing with yoga is that I never want to push myself too hard- I knew even before that alarmist “Yoga will hurt you!” article that I could hurt myself if I pushed too hard into a stretch or pose. I do what I can, and try to do it correctly. If I can’t bend that far, I don’t. If I need 2 blocks to balance so I don’t collapse my chest, I use 2 blocks. No shame, just awareness of my limits. However, I do love that even after a couple weeks of regular practice (one or two classes a week) I can feel myself improving. Not rapidly, but little things here and there that get a little easier over time.

Some night I leave yoga feeling a little defeated (if it’s a balance-heavy class usually, since I have awful balance) but tonight just left me feeling nice and loose and so glad I made the snap decision to go!
