Glad.
I’m so glad I have roommates who somehow understand when to encourage me to be lazy (“Yes it’s too cold, you SHOULD put your fleece pants on, have another cup of coffee, and watch another episode of SVU!”), and when to remind me that I really do still have time to run. Meant to get up at 7:15 to get 5 miles in. Actually got up at 8:20, almost threw in the towel. But when I...

Half Marathon Training: Week Ten
I didn’t officially recap the last 2 weeks, since they included a lot of sick days and missed workouts. This week I really wanted a perfect week, but I dropped the ball on Monday and never quite picked it back up again. It was an okay week, and next week I’ll aim to do better! MONDAY 2/13 The plan: Strengthen & stretch What happened: Nothing TUESDAY 2/14 The plan: 5 mile run +...

9-miler...or maybe not?
I don’t really know how to count what happened today. I had 9 miles on my schedule, so I asked on twitter if I had any friends who wanted to join me for a few of them. One of my friends said he’d like to do 6 with me, so we made a plan to do a loop of Central Park. After that I’d do a loop of the reservoir + a little extra to get my 3 more miles in and finish out my run at Shake...

GPS fail/hill running win.
Last night I had 5 miles on the schedule, and I was determined to get them done even though it was night time and raining. I had a route mapped out for Tuesday’s 5 miler (which, spoiler alert, I missed) so I just tried to remember it and do it last night. About 6 or 7 minutes in, my phone said I had gone about .44 miles at a 16 minute/mile pace. I felt so speedy! What was happening? More...

Solo 10k
One of the goals I set for myself last week was to PR my 10k time with the Hot Chocolate 10k. Unfortunately, I got sick and missed almost all my workouts for the week, including the race. Since I pushed all my training back a week to compensate, I had 10k on my schedule for today. Why not still push for the PR? I wasn’t sure if it would be possible, since I took a week off from running, and...

Gimme your recipes?
I’m looking for a recipe for a vegetable dish (veggies, not just vegetarian) that can be made ahead, sit in a fridge for a day, and be microwaved then eaten. Like something that can be made in a casserole dish. Any thoughts? (I’m thinking NOT Thanksgiving-style green bean casserole, and I’m not counting potatoes as a vegetable in this challenge.)

The Enemy.
A month ago I did a three-day DIY juice cleanse to re-set my eating habits and get myself back on track. As a side effect, I lost about 7 pounds. Seeing the number on the scale plummet made me feel pretty great. Two weeks ago I had a perfect training week. I did all my workouts and got almost all my miles in. My long run was my fastest and best-feeling long run ever. That also made me feel...

Better.
I guess being sick means disappearing for the week, as my diet consisted of equal parts ice cream, mac & cheese, halls defense and nyquil. I’m finally back to feeling like a human being after confining myself to my bed all weekend (which meant skipping the M-M-Manhattan Hot Chocolate 10k, brunch, a soccer game and the super bowl…though as someone who doesn’t care about...

Sometimes it's just not meant to be.
I’ve given up on my goals of another perfect week with no missed workouts, because my body has decided to get sick instead. I took my first sick day in about 2 years (second sick day EVER) today, in hope that the extra sleep will allow me to be able to run my 10k on Saturday. I’ve downed some Nyquil, now if you’ll excuse me I am about to rinse my nose out with saline and hit...

Half Marathon Training: Week Seven
MONDAY 1/23 The plan: Strengthen & stretch What happened: “Krav Maga.” It’s in quotes because it’s a combo krav maga/women’s self defense/general fitness class, which means that none of those goals REALLY gets effectively accomplished. But I did enough to work up a sweat and definitely got a bit of strengthening out of it. TUESDAY 1/24 The plan: 4.5 mile run, +...

8 happy miles.
It’s amazing how easily I can talk myself out of working out, as though I’m doing it for my own good. My back ached this morning from an assortment of activities the past couple days, and my obliques were sore from doing kettlebell windmills as part of my workout yesterday. My legs were a little tired feeling, probably due to lack of stretching yesterday. I woke up at 8:15, ate a...

I don't know why it took me so long to realize...
…that my second half marathon is exactly 6 months after my first! #1 was the day before my 27th birthday, and #2 is the day before my half birthday. Today’s schedule calls for cross training. I didn’t get up in time for bootcamp, and I would like to run hill repeats in Prospect Park, but I am feeling a little lazy and want to save my legs for tomorrow’s 8-miler*. So...

Run when it's raining.
Run when you don’t really want to. Run when it’s early. Run when you don’t really have time to. Not because it will make you feel better or like more of a badass (though, it will), but because all of the above will make you go faster without actually noticing or trying particularly hard! All of the above statements were discovered on my run this morning, which was speedier than...

Dreams.
Last night I had a dream that absolutely GUTTED me. All day, thinking about it brought me to tears. I felt silly trying to explain it to my roommates, because when I say it out loud it sounds so ridiculous, but my dream last night was like someone made a movie out of my worst fear and then forced me to play the main character. In my dream, I was hanging out with two of my friends from work. We...

Yoga mat?
I’m looking to buy a yoga mat for less than $40. Amazon seems to have a few deals today but the ones in the under-$20 range were all reviewed as being too slippery. Anyone have a recommendation for something affordable (not spending $80 on a mat, sorry) that is a little stickier for someone who tends to slide around in down dog?

Lunch Pirate
or, How I Accidentally Ended Up With Free Ramen For Lunch Today and Still Feel Bad About it. Yesterday I ordered lunch via delivery.com with a few of my coworkers. When I got a call that my food was downstairs, I went to the lobby where I found 6 or 8 delivery men with unmarked bags of food, standing silently along the perimeter of the lobby. After surveying the situation, I approached a man...

Yoga was awesome tonight.
I’ve decided to try to switch my default yoga day from Thursday to Tuesday- Thursday’s class is cost by donation, so it’s been getting progressively more crowded. Last week I missed it because the subway was being dumb, but there were 16 people so there wouldn’t have been room for me anyway. Today I decided sort of at the last minute to go, so I walked around the corner to...

TUESDAY 1/17 The plan: Cross training What happened: Nothing.  WEDNESDAY 1/18 The plan: 4.5 mile run, Krav Maga What happened: Nothing- fail. How many times in one week can I miss workouts...
Three. The answer is three. After a good hour of bootcamp this morning, I headed back to the apartment to change out of my workout gear and into, well, different workout gear. It was 10:30 and I planned to hit up a krav maga class at noon. Now that I knew where it was. When I got to the subway around 11:20 I realized I’d left my metrocard on my dresser. I should’ve just turned back...

The Feast.
A couple weeks ago it was my roommate’s birthday so we went to this awesome Mexican restaurant in our neighborhood. While their margarita was lackluster (it was fizzy!) the food was spectacular. I got a vegetarian platter of rice/beans/veggies/guac/corn on the cob with some tortillas, and I put together my own little fajita/tacos. I’ve been thinking about it ever since then, and...

Recommended: Siggy's Good Food
A few months ago there was a groupon for Siggy’s Good Food in Brooklyn Heights. A friend at work said that they had some good vegetarian stuff (it’s not a vegetarian place, but it is a local/organic restaurant) and encouraged me to buy the deal. Last week I realized that it expires in February, so I headed there for dinner tonight with my two old roommates (both also vegetarian.) We...

Failed plan x2
Yesterday was a very upsetting day, fitness wise. I’d stayed up too late the night before finishing a book, and ended up sleeping in too late to get my run in. That meant showing up to work already disappointed in myself and being crabby at my coworkers. After work I was supposed to meet up with 94Monkeys for a krav maga class to use a deal before it expired, but the voucher for the place...

The Saddest Run.
I was talking about running mantras yesterday and I told my best friend that a lot of the time, my running mantra is just chanting the word “eggs” in my head. Because eggs are my usual post-long run meal (cheap, easy protein.) I know that the more I run and the less I walk, the sooner I will be on my couch eating some delicious egg scramble. Yesterday, I bundled up and headed out for...

Half Marathon Training: Week Five
Week 5! It’s been rough going, but I’m finally in the swing of things and dedicated to my training. I learned the hard way that I can’t make up for lost time by trying to get in extra mileage (via my knee injury last summer while training for my first half) but I CAN buckle down and fulfill as much of my plan as possible. MONDAY 1/9 The plan: Strengthen & stretch What...

The Formula.
It’s been a while since I’ve counted calories. I got to the point where I could reasonably estimate portion sizes and already knew how many calories certain foods contained. (side note: I said this to my roommate the other day and she started quizzing me on various food staples’ caloric content…I’m impressed and saddened by how much I know.) However, it’s also...

A good way to start the long weekend
I found last night that while my friends usually like to tell me I’m lame when I decide not to drink when we go out, if I tell them I’m abstaining because I signed up for 9am bootcamp they say “Oh, well if you have to be productive in the morning then okay.” Also when my boss asked me what I was doing this weekend I excitedly replied “Probably working out a...

Sweat Session: the 4.5 miler that wasn't.
This morning I took my MapMyRun app out for a spin. I had 4.5 miles on the schedule, but about halfway down Prospect Park east drive I realized that it was probably irresponsible to schedule so many miles after only 1 day back on solid food. I’d eaten a packet of Gu when I got up at 7:15 but I still ended up feeling a little uneasy and decided to turn back before I felt awful. I cut across...

Vegetable Fried Rice
At first I wanted to make single-serve fried rice. Then I figured I might as well make 3 servings, since my boil-in-a-bag brown rice makes 3 servings per bag. Then I added so many veggies that it bulked the dish up to 5 or 6 servings! The result was delicious dinner at a fraction of the cost and calories of chinese take-out! Ingredients 3 cups cooked brown rice 1 package extra firm tofu 2...

Recommended for lunch: Just Salad
It seems at least half the people I work with are obsessed with going to get lunch at Just Salad, and I’ve recently drunk the kool-aid. There are a lot of overpriced custom salad places in New York, and most of them are pretty much the same. Just Salad isn’t all that different, but it’s convenient to my office, and they have a couple customer loyalty deals. 1. Buy a reusable...

So. Full.
I woke up this morning feeling hungry, then left the apartment feeling a tiny bit nauseous (which I blame on taking my multivitamin on an empty stomach.) A few sips of room-temperature ginger ale fixed that right up. My normal oatmeal serving is 1/2 cup (uncooked) and today I made 1/3c, with almond milk, peanut butter, pumpkin butter, raisins and slivered almonds. It’s possible that no...

Juice Cleanse: the final verdict

5 Health-related iPhone apps I like.
I got my iPhone less than 2 weeks ago and I’ve definitely become one of Those People. iPhone people, who are constantly swiping at their screens playing with this or that (though, I refuse to be one of those people who sits around at social gatherings staring at my phone to play Words With Friends with other people who are in the same room.) There are a lot of great free or cheap apps to...

DIY Juice Cleanse
Let me clarify something before I get going: I think cleanses are BS You do not need to fast or drink some gross concoction to “detox” your body. Your body does that on its own. You have organs that detox like it’s their job (because it is.) I do not think juice fasts or cleanses are a healthy or effective way to lose weight. I’ve said on a few occasions that the one...

NYC Half Training: Week 2 Recap
Predictably, week 2 was worse than week 1. Week 3 will likely be worse, but week 4 will improve. I hope. It’s a busy month!
